Today went very smoothly. The kids are already starting to catch onto the routine of school. We started off the day with a coloring sheet, then I introduced how our morning meeting/calendar will go. Mrs. Mary (our para who is in the classroom for about an hour every day) read the kids the book "Chicka Chicka Boom Boom!" This book is an introduction to the alphabet. We did a craft project where we made our own chicka chicka trees from the story. Although this was a multi-step activity, the kids did a fantastic job! I was very impressed :)
The children got to explore some more areas of the room today, including the block and 'pretend' centers. Along with this, we celebrated 2 birthday's this week, and the kids were lucky to have a special snack to end the day.
Boy do our mornings fly by! We started off our day by learning a new song, "Freeze Dance." The boys and girls get to dance around the room until they heard "FREEZE!" Then they had to hold their position until the music started again. We had a lot of fun with this song. Then we started our second day of the math curriculum. We warmed up with the number parade and counting. Then the students worked on their math mats with a baggie of manipulatives we will use throughout the year. We worked on representing a number in a variety of ways and positions using square inch tiles. The kindergarteners then worked with a partner to match their partners formations with the square inch tiles. They did a pretty good job at this for day 1.
After math we played a game called 'fruit basket upset.' The boys and girls were given a letter, and when they heard that letter called they had to change places with another letter. We will keep working on this as the students become more familiar with their letters :)
We ended our day by playing a memory smartboard game with letters. The boys and girls really enjoy doing activities on the smartboard.
Looking forward to another great day tomorrow! The students have been so quiet, I'm waiting for them to burst out of their shells :) :)
We had a pretty quiet Monday. Three kindergarteners were sick and everyone else was either being shy or tired from their weekends :) We started our day on the carpet and reviewed some of our rules. We talked about where to hand in completed assignments, and where to put unfinished work. Unfinished work will need to be done before the boys and girls can take part in fun Fridays, the only day they will get 'choice' time. Hopefully this will give the students incentive to stay on task ;)
We started our Math curriculum today. The students were introduced to the "Number Parade," and giant number cards that we will go through everyday to practice. The kids did a great job! We read the book "Anno's Counting Book," and because it had no words the students helped me 'read' the pictures. To go along with the story the students drew '10' of an object on a piece of paper. Some drew kindergarten kids, or spiders, or flowers. They also traced their hands and practiced counting from one pinkie finger to the next, and then reversed.
We did a step-by-step bear coloring sheet. This was hard for the students to not work ahead and to wait for their next instruction! They did a good job though.
You should start seeing the students basketball smiley faces coming home with stickers to show that the students had a great day and did not move their clothes pin down to any 'fouls.'
--FYI book orders have been sent home. These are optional. If you do choose to order something, we get points for the classroom to order classroom books. :)
