Today we had a great morning. We did two lengthy reading tests that the boys and girls did wonderful on. Then we did a few activites that the kids worked through at their own pace; they worked on a pen pal letter to their secret pals they will be writing to all year. They will meet them at the end of the year on a field trip! They also worked on coming up with words that begin with certain letters (depending which board they picked- i.e A-apple, ant, animal, etc). They had time to get unfinished work done before they could play a new math game called BUMP. After lunch they had indoor recess. Unfortunately, this did not go so well. I had several student reports of a very loud classroom with boys and girls not following the rules we had laid out. We talked about it as a class, and decided together what would be a fair consequence. They felt that having quiet snack today (instead of playing games or talking) along with taking away two turtle time minutes from everyone would be the most fair. We had a great math lesson where we learned about partner houses. We discussed doubles and fair shares (the same thing). We touched on how letters are sometimes used to stand for numbers ( 9+1 = m+n). Studies have shown that even young children can understand and use variables to show general expressions and equations. We had our first set of MAP testing in the computer lounge. Then we finished up math and did a worksheet activity before playing BUMP. In social studies, we reviewed urban, suburb, and rural. We talked more about communities. We ended the day with PE! (My pictures aren't loading today, so more tomorrow :) )

Today we had a fun day!  Right away this morning we went to the computer lab to do our first round of math testing.  It was hard for most of us.  When we got back from MAP testing, we went to Miss C's classroom to do social studies with her class.  We learned that American Indians were the first people in North America.  They did a special dance called the Eagle Dance to greet visitors that came.  We watched a video of an American Indian doing the Eagle Dance.  Ask your child tonight to show you what the Eagle Dance looks like.  We had inside recess today because it was rainy!   We watched Johnny Appleseed, the movie.  This afternoon we had music and library.  We got to check out TWO books! Then, we had Daily 5 centers.  We worked on our spelling, reading, and writing sentences.  Our day ended with math.  In math today we learned about break-aparts of 6.  We are all getting SO good at break-aparts!  Have a nice night!  Hopefully the rain goes away.  See you all tomorrow!

In math we talked about partners of 6.  Some of them are 3 + 3, 5+1, and 2+4!  We also learned a new term that is VERY important.  EQUAL!! 2=2, 3=3, 1,234=1,234  After math we had a special surprise during social studies.  Ms. Battaglia's class joined us!  We started with finding out what we know about the first Americans.  The things we knew were that they were alive, that they sang, that they were people, that they had a heart, and that they lived in our country.  Then Ms. Battaglia read to us about the American Indians and we learned that they painted in caves, danced the Eagle dance, wore cloths and feathers, that there were 1,000s of groups, ate fish, squash, and corn, and they have traditions like us.  We even got to watch an actual Eagle dance!  It was cool!!!  Next, we went to the computer lab to take our MAP test on math!  We did great!  After lunch, we read Noelle's favorite story and then we worked on our handwriting.  We are all getting WAY better at that!! Next, we had phy ed.  In phy ed we played freeze tag and rode scooters!  It was super cool.  After phy ed, we read a story about a little boy who just wanted to be left alone.  It was because of a big bad bully.  Ask your child what happened at the end of the story.  Then, we started our drawings for a school-wide contest on a NO BULLY ZONE t-shirt.  We will finish them tomorrow.  Finally, we ended our day with the Daily 5!  Ask me what my favorite center was today.  It was a great day!  I can't wait to see you all tomorrow!!

Today we started with math like always!  We worked with stair steppers!! We talked about one more and one less.  Try them out at home tonight!  We got to bring our own stair steppers home!!!!! Then we had social studies where we talked about timelines.  Together we made our schedule for our specialists.  You can keep this on your fridge to remind you when Library check in is and when we have our other specialists.  After that, we had music.  In music, we drew grandma's feather bed/  Then we shared it.  After lunch, we went to the computer lab again.  We did great on our MAP tests.  Then Noelle shared her poster and her show and tell.  We loved the bunny that she brought today.  Ask me about Noelle at home tonight!  She's pretty awesome!!!  Then we had library.  We read a story and talked about bullies and being nice.  Finally, we ended with language arts.  First, we got envelopes with words in them that we had to make sentences out of.  Some teams worked much better than others.  Then, we learned about our new high frequency words, in, no, and too!  Finally, we ended with sorting our spelling words.  It was a great and busy day!  I can't wait to see you tomorrow.

We had a great day!  This morning we had language arts and our second round of MAP testing.  We are all done with the reading portion of our MAP testing. For language arts today, we read the story "The Van" as a whole group and with a partner.  In this story, the van couldn't move because it was too heavy.  They solved the problem by pulling a wagon full of their stuff.  We played a fun envelope game.  During this game we had to put sentences in the correct order.  All of the words were scrambled up and we had to make them make sense!  Everyone did an awesome job at this and worked great together.  We had music and gym this afternoon.  In music, we got to share our pictures. Our pictures were of a listening map.  Gym today was tons of fun.  We got to ride around on scooters!  For social studies today, we started out with some review from yesterday.  We got in a big circle and shared what we would like to be in the future.  Then, we learned about a timeline.  We made a class timeline for our week at school and all of the specialists that we go to each day.  Our day ended with math.  It was working with stair steps 1-10.  We learned all about 1 more and 1 less. Have a fantastic night!  Go out and enjoy the weather, see you tomorrow!

When time allows, I am going to have the students write a blog entry for that day. I will usually ask the star student first, then volunteers. Here is today's child's post... Today we had morning meeting then we took the reading test. Were tacking this test to see where were at right now. Then we did centers. My favorite center was the bullying one. We are having a contest to create a teeshirt design for our whole school to wear against bullying. Then we went to lunch. After lunch we had P.E. In social studies we learned about cities and grids. We had music after that. And then we had math. We learned about math mountains and we played a partner game. Today we had a great day. Miss Voigts class.

Today we had a good Monday. The boys and girls got assigned new weekly jobs, like teachers assistant and sanitary patrol. We started our turtle time over, trying to build up free time for Fun Friday. We did daily 5 centers; writing a letter to our new star student, doing a fluency test with me, reading-to-self, listening to a book on tap, and working on writing our word wall words. We started our "Beginning of the Year Benchmark" tests. They did pretty well for the first two portions.   After lunch we did more testing, had PE followed immediately by library, then settled in for a math lesson on partners of numbers. We built math mountains and used our white boards to find patterns.   We finished with a story starter "If I were an animal I'd be a..." to wrap up our testing for the day.   Get lots of rest and a good breakfast each day this week for our tests! :)

We started with math.  In math we worked more with the number 5!  We had lambs (Kids) jump over a fence to show us how we break apart 5.  Then we practiced writing all of the partners of 5.  Finally, we took a quick quiz that was REALLY HARD!!!  Just kidding!  It was a piece of CAKE!  We also learned a new dance in math that teaches us left and right.  This dance is called the "Cupid Shuffle".  Have your child show you their MOVES tonight!!  Then, we had social studies.  In social studies we talked about past, present, and future.  Some of us want to be cops when we grow up.  Then we took our spelling pre-test.  Check it out in our folders tonight.  After lunch we went to the computer lab to take our MAP tests.  We did great! Next we played a new game called.... PIG!! Have your child tell you about it tonight.  Isaac says it was super fun playing with Nolan!  Then we had library.   After that we read a story and practiced working with sentences.  To end our day, we danced our dance for our high school friends Alex and Kaylee!  I can't wait to see you tomorrow.

It's MONDAY!  This morning we jumped right into reading.  We are working on the short a sound again this week.  We practiced writing short a words on our whiteboards with a partner.  We read the story "Sad, Sad Dan" and we learned more about sentences.  Then, we started working on our beginning of the year reading benchmark test.  We had music in the morning and gym in the afternoon.  In social studies we learned all about the past, present, and future.  Some of us had a lot of fun drawing what we think we are going to look like in the future!  After social studies, we went to our first round of MAP testing.  Some parts were easy and some questions were hard.  Math today we learned about break-aparts of 5.  We practiced this using little "lambs" today.  Our day ended with some spelling practice.  I hope everyone has a great night.  I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow!
