Yesterday we had a great day. We were very busy! We started with a language arts lesson where we learned about summaries. When writing a summary, you need to only include the MAIN parts-none of the juicy details! I read aloud a story and then the boys and girls took some time to formulate a good summary. They did fantastic! I was so proud of the time they put into their summary and using good handwriting.
We did our centers and had lunch and PE. Then we did a social studies lesson where we talked about globes and maps.
After we went to music we did a math lesson on centimeters and shapes. Then we measured various objects around the room. We will continue to work on this-manipulating the rulers to draw straight lines when measuring objects :)
TOMORROW: Oct 31-
We will be having our fall festival party in the PM. Students may either wear their costumes to school (probably less of a hassel) or change into them later. We will do fall centers with the other classes in the PM. We will also participate in a parade around school tomorrow afternoon.
We started our day out a little different that normal. There were no ipads in math. Today we reviewed our chapter 2 because tomorrow will be the chapter two test! We are going to do great on it! After that, we went into social studies. Today we finished our I Love Lucy Chocolate Factory timelines! They look GREAT!!! After lunch, we practiced more of the letter e. We are getting really good at this tricky vowel. We also learned our new high frequency words. They are eat, was, first, said, day, and time. Then we read a story with all of these words in it. It was about a little red hen that needed help cleaning up the food mess. Finally, we ended with working on our invitations. I can't wait to see you all tomorrow! TONIGHT YOU GET A NIGHT OFF OF HOMEWORK! NO MOVIE OR WORKSHEET!!!
Today we had a good day! We had reading this morning. We also had a special visitor today, Mr. Harker. He stopped in to see just how awesome we have been doing in first grade! We practiced our high frequency words on the smartboard. Then, we wrote short e words on our whiteboards with a partner. Some partners got up to eight short e words in one minute. That's incredible! We worked on comparing/contrasting things. When we compare and contrast things we are looking for ways that they are alike and different. Language Arts ended with us reading the story "Little Red Hen Gets Help" and doing a retelling sheet. We had to draw pictures of what happened in the beginning, middle, and end of the story. After reading this story we learned that we should always be good helpers. Nobody appreciates when others refuse to help! This afternoon, we had music and PE. After snack today we played a review game for social studies. Everyone did a great job and I think we are ready for our test! Math today was also review. We took a practice test all together. Good Monday!
Today we had a great morning. We started lesson 7 in language arts. We reviewed previous vocab, learned new vocab (sight and robust) and reviewed ed/ing endings. We read aloud the story "Gus and Grandpa," as a large group before breaking into centers.
During centers we wrote a letter to our star student. We did 'word work' by writing our new sight words, but leaving out the vowels! We also read to self, read to someone, and listened to "Gus and Grandpa" on cd.
After centers we took our spelling pre-test. The boys and girls checked these and they should be coming home today to start practicing!
After lunch we had social studies. There, we talked about natural resources and synthetic resources. Ask your child to explain those vocab words to you :)
We had PE and right after library. We took a break for snack, followed by math. In unit 2 we will be working with measurement. Today a centimeter ruler was introduced. We explored the ruler by examining the marks and what they meant. We did some practice pages that gave us practice with this.
We ended with RTI small group time and finishing up odds and ends.

Thursday is our fall festival party. You may bring your halloween costume but also a change of clothes. We will be doing fall games in the afternoon as well as a parade around the school in our costumes.

Today was fabulous because when we came in the ipads worked awesome! We got right to the Sophia website and found our movie. Today was the last day of watching the ipads in school. Wednesday night will be our first movie at home! I can't wait to see how this works! After that, our smartboard was not working so we skipped our calendar and went right into centers. We had five math centers today. One was with Miss C. One was our card game. One was our math books. Another one was our videos. Our last one was our shapes. After that, we had social studies where we watched I Love Lucy again. Now, we are working on a timeline of the I Love Lucy chocolate factory. We got to the conveyor belt today. After lunch, we learned about the letter E! MY NAME IS ETHAN AND I LIVE IN E,E,E,ESKO!!! Then we played a great round of PIG! After library we worked on our new spelling words and practiced reading exclamations! At the end of the day we worked on invitiations! Make sure you are planning at home when you will be watching the Sophia.org movie. I got ten back from kids today! THANKS TO BROCK FOR THE DELICIOUS TREAT!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY BROCK!!! Welcome back Madi! We are so glad you are feeling better. This morning we jumped into reading right away. Our lesson started out by reading the story, "There Was An Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat". This week we are working on the short e sound. We read the story" Ten Eggs" that had many short e words in it. For grammar this week we will be working on writing exclamatory sentences. For example, Get out of my room! After reading, we had music. In music class today we sang and listened to Halloween songs! Then, this afternoon we had PE. Social studies was pretty quick. We learned about factories and workers. In a factory, there are many workers doing many different jobs. Math today was practicing more addition and subtraction story problems. We are getting better and better each day at writing our equations horizontally and vertically. We just need to remember to show our work! Our day ended with coloring a picture of an event (picnic). We started our day with a little bummer. When we went to Sophia.org it had deleted our video. So we had math the old fashion way. We learned about horizontal and vertical. Ask me how we remember what vertical is. Next, we talked about jobs! Wal Mart is not a job. Being the clerk at Wal Mart is ajob. Then we talked about workers in a factory that work with machines. Then we watched the FAMOUS I LOVE LUCY clip where Lucy has to work in a CHOCOLATE factory. We were laughing so hard. Elijah was really worried about her getting fired. After lunch Officer Steve was here to spend the rest of the day with us. Then our third grade buds came. We made Halloween projects with our third grade bud. Some of them turned out AMAZING!!! Then we played Sparkle! It's a lot of fun and it helps us remember our spelling words. Next, we took our spelling test. After that we had Bryce's cupcakes that were delicious. After music, we took part of our theme test. Finally, we ended with Cmart and free choice. At the end of the day Officer Steve surprised us with TREATS! SO MANY TREATS! I can't wait to see you all on Monday!
Class Blog!
Today we started with the morning meeting. Then we did Fun Friday Centers. With meet the teacher we painted our pumpkins for fall festival. We learned a new board game called Skateboard Rally. We also played a new game our class got called "What's on my mind." We also did a center where we did our spelling words forwards and backwards!
After center time we went to lunch and played on the playground. Then we went to music. After music we had a class bathroom break. We took a language arts test, and then we did math centers. We went to computer, and then we got to do our turtle time! We ended the day with this class blog.
We had a fun day! This morning, we did our last center of daily five that we didn't get to yesterday. We played a quick game of SPARKLE before we took our spelling test. Then, we had to review and take our Theme 1 & 2 reading test. This test was kind of long, but I think we did a good job! We had PE, music, and 3rd grade reading buddies. Today the 3rd graders came down to our room! After reading buddies, we had math. Math today was learning how to write addition and subtraction problems horizontally and vertically. We will continue practicing writing our equations vertically. Our day ended with free choice and B-Mart. I hope you have a really fun weekend. See you all well rested on Monday!
