First Grade Curriculum
What can my child expect in the 1st grade Title I class?

Through positive encouragement and high interest activities, first graders gain a sense of competency with their reading skills and make gains toward on-grade-level skill acquisition. Students are introduced to 125 sight vocabulary words and focus on the comprehension skills of: word meaning in context, prediction, main idea, and facts/details. Phonics instruction includes letter recognition, consonant sounds, vowels- both short and long sounds, and the digraph combinations of th, sh, ch, and wh.
Materials used in the first grade classes include Harcourt Storytown Intervention materials, Leveled Literacy books, and a large variety of songs, poems, and games.
Home Reading Stories allow parents to witness the progress their child is making and provide a shared parent/child reading experience.
